Usage Capture and Documentation

To ensure proper documentation of supplies used in patient care, hospitals are challenged with the following:

• Ensuring that all chargeable supplies that are used for patient care are properly billed
• Accurately documenting product use in order to ensure complete medical records and to prevent insurance denials
• Properly accounting and reporting on other product dispositions such as wasted, defective, or products that are returned for credit
• Understanding the actual cost of supply usage for payer and purchasing negotiations

The burden of documentation falls on busy clinicians at the point of care. Typing in a supply, using a drop-down list, entering information at a supply cabinet console, or even writing down supplies on a billing form can be time-consuming and error-prone, especially when done in multiple systems including the specialized clinical system, the medical record system, and the billing system.

WaveMark has developed a one-stop solution for usage capture and documentation. The Point of Use system is based on the premise that usage tracking should take place at the time and place of consumption and should be easy to learn and to use.    

Usage capture is performed at either a dedicated station or a mobile tablet.  In a single step, the products are assigned to a patient and automatically decremented from inventory. Usage information is also sent in real-time into the clinical systems for documentation and to the billing system.
